In an effort to raise the level of awareness and appreciation of Eastern Canadian history and culture in Western Canada, The Wild Wild West Event Centre has organized a Maple Sugar festival for the benefit of Calgary and area students, from Kindergarten through Grade 8.
Over the past three years, we have produced a very popular Sugar Shack / Maple Sugar Festival or Cabane à Sucre. This festival comes complete with a short educational video and entertaining scavenger hunt showing the history and manufacturing process of maple syrup. Both are in English et en français (and in French).
We serve a traditional meal of sausages, ham, pancakes, beans, scrambled eggs, hash browns, with maple syrup to pour on your pancakes or everything! And one free maple syrup on snow!!
Note: If anyone has particular allergies or dietary concerns, please let us know ahead of your anticipated date.
After the meal, the children are treated to the talents of the world renowned Chakidor (André and Valérie) from Gatineau, Québec, who regale them with French Canadian folklore music in both French and English. Students are invited on stage to sample traditional music, dances, and of course, the spoons!
Following the music, we have fun outdoor activities available for the children to do at their own pace. These activities, run by the parent volunteers and teachers, include horse - drawn wagon rides (parent or teacher to be on each tour), three person team plank races (someone will be available to show the volunteers how to organize), tug of war, snow blocks (styrofoam) for building or playing, maple syrup history hunt, and of course, the maple taffy on snow!
2010 is our fourth year for our Sugar Shack and we have had upwards of 2000 students each year over a two week and a bit period. We are anticipating the same or more for 2010. We can accommodate up to 200 students per day at a time.
The hours are from 11am to 2pm. The cost is $21.95 plus GST ($23.05) per person for groups under 50 persons; and $19.95 plus GST ($20.95) per person for groups over 50 persons.
Teachers and volunteers are not required to pay since they will be manning the activities.
First Maple Taffy on Snow - free
Extra Maple Taffy on Snow -$2.00 each.
There will be Maple Sugar Products on sale, as well.
